Whole-home heating and cooling

Ducted Heat Pumps in Christchurch

One system, warm air to every room. Ducted heat pumps hide in the ceiling and heat the whole house through Canterbury's hard frosts, then keep it cool when the nor'wester bites.

A ducted heat pump is one central unit that pushes warm or cool air through ducts to every room in the house. In Christchurch it means no cold hallways or bedrooms on frosty mornings, and even cooling through dry summers. Best designed in during a build.

Why whole-home ducted suits Christchurch homes

Out on the plains suburbs like Lincoln, Prebbleton and Pegasus, a single high-wall unit in the lounge leaves the hallway and bedrooms cold. You feel it the moment you step out of the living room on a frosty July morning. Ducted heating fixes that by warming the whole house evenly instead of one room.

A ducted system also handles the flip side of our climate. When the nor'wester dries everything out in summer, the same system cools every room, not just where the unit sits. If you only want cooling in one or two rooms, wall-mounted air conditioning may be the simpler answer, so it's worth weighing up what you actually need before committing.

Designing ducting into a rebuild or new subdivision

Christchurch has a lot of post-quake rebuilds and fresh subdivisions in Northwood, Cashmere and out toward Pegasus, and that's the ideal time to fit ducting. When the ceiling space is open and the plans aren't locked in, we can position the ducts, grilles and indoor unit exactly where they work best. It's far tidier and cheaper than cutting into a finished house later.

The indoor unit sits in the ceiling cavity out of sight, with slim grilles in each room. If your ceiling space is tight, ceiling cassette heat pumps can be a good middle ground for open-plan areas. We'll talk you through the types of heat pump that fit your layout during the quote.

What a ducted system includes

A ducted setup is more than just a box in the ceiling. Here's what goes into a typical install:

  • An outdoor compressor unit, sized to the whole house
  • A concealed indoor unit in the ceiling cavity
  • Insulated ducting running to each room
  • Discreet grilles or diffusers in ceilings
  • A central controller, often with zoning so you can heat sleeping and living areas separately

Getting the size and install right

Sizing matters more with ducted than with a single room unit, because the system has to reach every corner of the house through hard frosts. Undersize it and the far bedrooms never quite warm up. You can get a rough idea with our heat pump sizing calculator, then we confirm it on site.

We install brands we trust for Canterbury conditions, including Daikin heat pumps, which handle cold starts well. A clean heat pump installation is what keeps a ducted system quiet and efficient for years. For a breakdown of what you'll pay, see our notes on installation cost before you decide.

Ducted heat pump questions, answered

Are ducted heat pumps worth it in NZ?

For the right home, yes. If you've got a larger house with cold hallways and bedrooms, a ducted system gives even warmth everywhere instead of one hot room and a cold rest. For a small home or a single living area, a high-wall unit usually makes more sense for the money.

How much does a ducted heat pump cost?

Ducted systems cost more than single split units because there's the central unit, the ducting and the install labour on top. The exact figure depends on house size, number of rooms and whether it's a new build or a retrofit. We give you a firm price after we've measured up, not a guess over the phone.

Can you retrofit ducted heating into an existing house?

You can, but it's more work than fitting it during a build. We need enough ceiling space to run the ducts and access to route them to each room, which is easier in single-storey homes. Some older Christchurch houses make it awkward, so we'll have a look and tell you straight whether it stacks up for yours.
